About the Stroke Hero Awards

The American Stroke Association honors people who strive to overcome stroke.

The Stroke Hero Awards are awarded in five categories to individuals and groups making an outstanding effort to educate, inspire and raise awareness about stroke locally or nationally.

Stroke is the No. 5 killer and a leading cause of disability in the United States.

Award Categories

The stroke community submits nominations for four award categories, and public voting determines the Voters’ Choice winner. 

Outstanding Survivor

Honors an individual who has survived a stroke and used their experience to educate, inspire and bring awareness about stroke on a local or national level.

2020 Winner: Gracie Doran

Outstanding Caregiver

Honors an individual who has cared for a stroke survivor and used their experience to educate, inspire and bring awareness about stroke on a local or national level.

2020 Winner: Jill Veach

Outstanding Support Group

Honors a stroke support group committed to educating, inspiring and bringing awareness about stroke on a local or national level.

2020 Winner: Hazard Stroke Support and Caregiver Support Group

Outstanding Group

Honors a group committed to educating, inspiring and bringing awareness about stroke on a local or national level. Groups can include, but are not limited to, stroke teams, medical facilities and people who have come together to raise awareness about stroke.

2020 Winner: The Aphasia Choir of Vermont

Voters’ Choice

Honors an individual or group making an outstanding effort to educate, inspire and bring awareness about stroke on a local or national level. Judges select candidates from the nominations in the other four categories, and public voting determines the winner.
