Topic 12: Dysphagia After Stroke

Dysphagia is a common problem after a stroke that makes swallowing difficult. It can affect how you eat, drink, or take medications. About two out of every three survivors of stroke may have trouble swallowing early in recovery.

While some people improve within weeks, others may need more time and support. Evaluation and individualized therapy plans are critical to prevent further health problems. Speech therapists and dietitians can help you learn safe ways to eat and drink. With the right care and patience, many people see progress and feel better over time.
