Every person deserves to live a longer, healthier life
That’s why the American Heart Association is working with diverse collaborators locally, nationally and globally to increase healthy life expectancy.
U.S. Impact Goal
Together, we will equitably increase healthy life expectancy from 66 to at least 68 years by 2030.
Global Impact Goal
Together, we will equitably increase global healthy life expectancy from 64 to at least 67 years by 2030.
Increasing healthy life years won't be easy
Healthy life expectancy refers to how long people are expected to live in good health – years in which they can continue to do the things they enjoy.
In recent decades, healthy life expectancy was increasing thanks to better disease prevention and control, advances in medical treatment and improved lifestyle behaviors. However, recently there has been a leveling off and in some cases even a reversal in this trend. More people are living in poor health, beginning at a younger age, with increasing levels of frailty and disability impacted by behavioral and environmental risk factors.
We must focus on health equity
Everyone should enjoy health and well-being regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity or where they live. Yet people in communities with fewer opportunities often have a greater disease burden.
We know health is affected by physical environment and income as well as education, employment, social support and access to health care. Addressing these determinants of health can improve health and reduce disparities.
Everything we do will be focused through a health equity lens.
We can't do this alone. We need your support.
Backed by leading scientific research, medical expertise and more than 40 million volunteers and supporters, the American Heart Association is a relentless force for longer, healthier lives.
We're already collaborating with foundations, public corporations, nonprofits and governments around the globe on important work in this area.
Now we urge you to join us as we marshal the creativity, innovation and resources that will help ensure success. By working together we can equitably increase healthy life expectancy around the world.
