Welcome to National Stroke Association’s Acute Stroke Resource Center!


Stroke facts include:

  • Each year in the United States there are more than 795,000 strokes.

  • Stroke is the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer. 

  • Stroke kills approximately 144,000 people a year.

  • On average, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. 

  • Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability in the United States leaving two thirds of stroke survivors struggling with moderate to severe disability.

  • The cost for stroke-related medical care and disability is estimated to be $68.9 billion annually.


While most patients don’t get evidenced-based care, the Acute Stroke Resource Center has been developed to support the informational and educational needs of healthcare professionals. With the plan of becoming a leading “go to” resource for acute stroke, this site includes access to a comprehensive list of resources, including:
