I am … a Survivor.

Hello my name is Donald Gaskins, age 56 and a stroke survivor times two. First stroke was June 2014, a Hemorrhagic stroke on left side of body. I spent 3 days in hospital and returned home with exhaustion, weakness and numbness for weeks. I was able to return to work full time and back to Pastoring my church within a few months with little complications (besides numbness in face and left leg/foot). On July 7, 2016 I was in a church service and unexpectantly suffered another hemorrhagic stroke on the right side. After several days of ICU I was put into a regular room. This stroke was very different in many ways. My speech was tremendously affected, my right side was completely flaccid, my vision was blurry, aphasia and apraxia was very prominent in my daily tasks. I spent 7 weeks and 1 day (50 days) in the hospital and rehabilitation unit. I owe all praise and glory to my heavenly Father Jesus Christ for keeping me here and giving me another day, another chance to share my story for a witness of His Glory. My speech came back, doctors and therapist have been marveled at the speed of my recovery. I am very thankful for all the staff and medical teams that assisted with this recovery. I am gaining back strength daily. I can walk with assistance with a walker, daily grooming, eat and drink on my own, I am able to preach again and tell of the goodness that God has bestowed upon my life. My family, church family, community and staff at Health South has been the most influential part of my recovery. Surrounded by love and great supporters has helped me through alot. I still am recovering and trying to regain mobility of my right side. I go to outpatient therapy once a week and to a local YMCA for water therapy two times a week. Hope this story helps someone out there facing a similar situation. God Bless. Donald G
