I am a runner. I am a yoga teacher. I am a stroke survivor. Yes, a stroke survivor. Even as I write this, the entire event is all still so surreal. I was healthy and had no risk factors, yet, on April 13, 2011, at the age of 34, I suffered a stroke in my cerebellum. I experienced headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, loss of vision, loss of pain and temperature sensation on the left side of my body. In a matter of moments, my life was changed. Days after my stroke, I remember the frustration and defeat I felt at not being able to balance as I tried to place one foot in front of the other while trying, unsuccessfully, to walk in a straight line. The weeks and months following my stroke were not any easier. My mantra? Acceptance. Patience. Perseverance.

Today, through physical therapy and the unwavering support of my family and friends, not only am I walking in a straight line, but I am also running in one. Ok, so it's not a perfectly straight line, but it will do!

In an effort to take back what the stroke took from me, I have decided to run my 9th marathon. I am so grateful and humbled to be running the 2012 New York City Marathon on behalf of the National Stroke Association.

We need to raise awareness and fund additional research to stomp out stroke. I ask that you please support my efforts by making a donation to the National Stroke Association.

I am reminded every day that life is a gift, and it can change instantly. Please take a few seconds to familiarize yourself with the warning signs of a stroke. Doing so could help you save a life; maybe even your own.
