May Is a Time to Give Stroke Survivors a Little Hope

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time to educate the public about stroke and honor the estimated six million stroke survivor in the United States.

This year, National Stroke Association is promoting the importance of spreading awareness about how stroke recovery can include an element of HOPE. It’s not easy navigating the road to recovery, and education and motivation play big roles in making stroke recovery easier. During May, we encourage everyone to visit www. stroke.org/HOPE or call 1-(800)-STROKES to learn more and educate fellow stroke survivors and their families about:

  • How to navigate the often complicated recovery course that includes finding appropriate rehabilitation therapies for specific needs,
  • How to be a self-advocate,
  • How “small things”, like small electric appliances and velcro, can help improve quality of life,
  • How to maintain a nutritional diet and regular exercise to keep secondary stroke at bay,
  • How to find a local support group,
  • Why caregivers need support, too, and,
  • Recovery issues, such as fatigue, pain, bladder and bowel function, health insurance, sexuality, social support and how to manage life at home.

National Stroke Association thanks you for your ongoing support and motivation to educate others going through the lifelong journey of stroke recovery. Download National Stroke Association’s Hope Guide today at www. stroke.org/HOPE for more helpful tips and insights.

Happy National Stroke Awareness Month!
