Privacy Policy

National Stroke Association has created this Privacy Policy to explain why we collect particular information and how we will protect your personal privacy within our Web site. The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for the Web site located at the URL www.stroke.org (Site).

In order to fully understand your rights we encourage you to read this Privacy Policy as well as our Terms of Use. National Stroke Association reserves the right at any time and without notice to change this Privacy Policy simply by posting such changes on our Site. Any such change will be effective immediately upon posting. Because National Stroke Association wants to demonstrate our commitment to your privacy, this Privacy Policy notifies you of:

  • What personally identifiable information of yours is collected through the Site
  • Who collects such information
  • How such information is used
  • With whom your information may be shared
  • What choices you have regarding collection, use and distribution of your information
  • What kind of security procedures are in place to protect the loss, misuse or alteration of information under our control
  • How you can correct any inaccuracies in your information

Questions regarding this statement should be directed to National Stroke Association by sending an e-mail to NSAWebmaster@stroke.org. Please reference this Privacy Policy in your subject line.

National Stroke Association is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. Our registration forms require users to give us contact information that may include name, e-mail address, format preference (HTML vs. Text), address, interests, and similar information. Some of the ways we may use your information:

  • Respond to your inquiry about volunteering or hosting an event for National Stroke Association
  • Purchase goods or services
  • Enable you to make a donation or support an event
  • Register for an event or meeting
  • Deliver services, such as sending marketing communications and newsletters

National Stroke Association collects an IP address from all visitors to our Site. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you use the Internet. We use IP addresses to help diagnose problems with our server, administer our Site, analyze trends, track users' movement, gather broad demographic information for aggregate use in order for us to improve the Site, and deliver customized, personalized content. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.

National Stroke Association will not sell, share, or rent this information to others in ways other than those outlined in this statement. We do not store sensitive information from our visitors, such as credit card information.

National Stroke Association will share aggregate information with our partners and advertisers. This aggregate information does not contain personally identifiable information and therefore cannot identify any specific individual.

When the user signs up for services, we will share names, or other contact information that is necessary for the third party to provide these services. These parties are not allowed to use personally identifiable information except for the purpose of providing these services.

From time to time National Stroke Association sells portions of our “professional mailing list” to other organizations that provide goods or services to stroke care professionals, stroke survivors or caregivers. The one-time use of the list is limited solely to and exclusively for a specific purpose or service, which must be approved by National Stroke Association. All information provided to National Stroke Association is transmitted using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. SSL is a proven coding system that lets your browser automatically encrypt, or scramble, data before you send it to us. We also protect account information by placing it on a secure portion of our Site that is only accessible by certain qualified employees of National Stroke Association. Unfortunately, however, no data transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of such information.

National Stroke Association uses an outside credit card processing company to bill users for goods and services or to process donations. These companies do not retain, share, store or use personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes. National Stroke Association  partners with other parties to provide specific services such as a secured site for financial transactions. As an option, users may register and create a personal account profile to provide more personalized information. Users are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of the user ID and password, and are fully responsible for all activities that occur under their account. National Stroke Association has no liability or responsibility for such use. National Stroke Association users are given the opportunity to “opt-out” of having their personal information used by third parties at the point where we ask for the information for purposes not directly related to our site. For example, our informational email messages have an “opt-out” mechanism so users who register can change their minds and be removed from receiving future informational messages. If you decide at a later time that you want to opt out of any of National Stroke Association services, you can also contact Customer Service at 1(800)STROKES or email NSAWebmaster@stroke.org. Please reference “Opt Out” in the subject line and describe which services you would like to opt out of in the body of the email. To update or change your information and preferences, visit our user login page and log on to your account. You can also call National Stroke Association's customer service to update your information at (800) 787-6537.

If a user elects to use our referral service for informing a friend about our Site, we ask them for the friend's name and e-mail address. National Stroke Association will automatically send the friend a one-time e-mail inviting them to visit the Site. National Stroke Association stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time e-mail.

If a user wishes to subscribe to our push email technology or newsletters, we ask for contact information such as name and email address.

From time to time National Stroke Association requests information from users via surveys. Participation in these surveys is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose the information. Information requested may include demographic information (such as name, address, zip code or age level). Survey information will be used only for the purpose described on the survey.
