Twelfth Annual Walk with Dinah and Friends
September 26, 2009
Long Island, NY

“Tell me a fact and I will learn.  Tell me the truth and I will believe.  Tell me story and it will live in my heart forever.” (Author unknown)  Did you know that up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable?  It is expected that 795,000 people will have a stroke in 2009.   That would be equal to 11 pro football stadiums filled to capacity.  Strokes are the 3rd cause of death in this country and the leading cause of adult disability.  Up to 80% of the strokes are preventable.  You can prevent strokes!  Know your blood pressure, find out if you have atrial fibrillation, know your cholesterol level, control your diabetes and blood circulation problems, lower your sodium intake, include exercise and eat a lower fat diet in your daily routine.  If you smoke, stop.  If you drink, do so in moderation.  Take control of your life and live longer with prevention!

Established in 1984, National Stroke Association is the only national organization in the U.S. that focuses 100 percent on its efforts on strokes.  National Stroke Association achieves its mission to lower the incidence and impact of stroke by developing compelling community outreach programs, calling for continued improvement in the quality of patient care and the education for both health professionals and the general public about strokes.

The Suridis’ family and National Stroke Association are proud to announce the 12th Walk with Dinah and Friends.  This walk will be held on Saturday, September 26th at the Jones Beach boardwalk, Pavilion #6 in Long Island, NY.  Arrive at 9:30 for a prompt 10AM start time.  We thank each and every one of you for your support over the years and we welcome more people to join in our endeavor. Suridis Family

On St. Patrick's Day in 1998, Jim, Gregory, Annette and Alicia Suridis unexpectedly lost their mother, Dinah, to a stroke.  Rather than grieve and move on with their lives, the four siblings made a lasting move in honor of their mother's memory by creating "Walk with Dinah and Friends" to raise money for stroke prevention and awareness.  Now in its 10th year, the annual event is a celebration of life and a reminder that stroke can be a silent killer.
