Healthcare Professional & Survivor

During her 30 years of work in physical rehabilitation, Kris C. has designed a variety of innovative programs in education, research and patient care. As Founding Director of the LIFE Center-Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), Kris led design teams, educators and technology experts in creating the country's largest source of information for people with disabilities, their families and health professionals. The award‐winning LIFE (Learning, Innovation, Family, Empowerment) Center and its website connect people to resources in key areas of life. As part of this program, Kris designed a model system for peer mentoring, integrating patient perspectives of stroke survivors to enhance doctor/patient communications, patient and family education and public awareness.

She also developed innovative school programs to promote disability awareness and inclusion with children, teens and adults and founded the RIC Stroke Club which has been operating since 1980. Kris has additional personal experience as a stroke survivor, caregiver and has dedicated her career to helping people understand and value individual differences as well as resources that enable self‐determination and active participation in life.
