Survivor
My husband, John, had a massive stroke in September 2007. He spent seven months in the hospital and rehab center. As his wife and caregiver, I have watched John struggle with simple tasks that you wouldn't give a second thought. As a former Marine, John always had a strong work ethic and gave 100% to any task he undertook. When you met John, you instantly took a liking to his affable demeanor. John is still that likable guy, but there's a piece of the man he was, missing, that the stroke has taken that I don’t know if we will ever get back. He still goes to physical therapy twice a week and exercises his mind and body daily, and we have no plan on giving up. Our hope is that the new pathway his brain may create will lead us back to the road of the strong, vibrant man John once was. Either way, we are committed to fighting the effects of his stroke, no matter how long it takes. Our motto, "Never, never, never, never, give up!"
