Survivor
I am so
glad I got to know Kristi when I joined her stroke support group, Stroke
Talk for Young People, three years ago. She had a brain stem stroke
like I did and experienced being “locked in.” She had a brain stem stroke in
the pontine/medulla area. She just had her 11th anniversary of the
stroke which occurred on December 24, 1999, four months shy of her 30th
birthday. Kristi walks with a cane and her speech sounds a little funny, but
she says, "I can live independently if need be and have been driving again
for the past five years. Without hope, we have nothing and I was left here for
a reason. I want to help the many others out there that are just looking for
some help. I need to spread my words of hope and try to inspire through my own
experiences." Kristi started the first well known Yahoo stroke support
group for young survivors back on February 2, 2002. Eight years later, she is
still going strong with a little over 400 members. You can find her support
group at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/stroketalkforyoungpeople/.
