Survivor
Two weeks
before her wedding, Ericka had a deep brain hemorrhagic bleed of unknown cause.
She had been admitted to the hospital five days earlier for kidney failure, but
the bleed and subsequent stroke occurred at discharge. So far, no connection
between the two events can be found. However, if she had not been in the
hospital, she is likely to have not survived. She was able to get immediate
treatment and surgery. Five days later, the neurologist pronounced that she
would need 24 hour care the rest of her life. That was April 2009. Today she is
driving, continuing with visual/physical/occupational/speech therapies; she has
full cognitive abilities though she is mildly aphasic. She and now husband, Ty,
have begun ranching in central Texas. Her story is chronicled on www.caringbridge.org/visit/erickat.
