Charles W. ![]() I am a stroke survivor Mr. W. is the perfect example of who I think of when you mention Faces of Stroke. Charles W., also known as "Chuckie," is a living example of how someone’s spirit and determination can overcome stroke. He has had multiple strokes, heart attacks and, within the past two years, the loss of both of his legs. As part of his initial rehabilitation, he decided to use his involved side to begin illustrating his recovery. Daily, we watched in amazement as he transformed a sheet of paper into a wonderful and moving piece of artwork. Currently, both of his initial illustrations hang in the gym where he received his therapy. Even after discharge, Chuckie was not finished with the therapeutic illustrations; this was only the beginning. He visits three times per week to help encourage new stroke patients and will provide them a drawing, if requested. Many of his illustrations have been part of a regional art exhibition focused on the therapeutic use of art. As a stroke survivor, Chuckie is a welcome face for all the patients we treat. He is able to bring hope and encouragement to people when they are at their lowest point and let them know life will continue. He has dedicated his life to bringing joy to all who come his way. He uses his power chair and local transport to arrive at the hospital hours before his scheduled appointment. This way he can visit as many patients as possible before going home. As you can see, Mr. W. is a living example and picture of a Stroke Survivor. |
