Stroke Support Group Leader
Barb Koch is our Therapeutic Recrecreation Specialist at Avera St. Luke's Rehabilitation Center. We are a C.A.R.F. certified Stroke Specialty Rehab. Stroke has a physical side, but it also has the spiritual and emotional side which effects a survivor's recovery.
This is where Barb's gifts become vital in the recovery process. We know how powerful a positive attitude is in recovery.
All of a sudden from the room of a severely depressed patient, we hear the survivor and Barb laughing. The next session, the tears of healing fall freely and the survivor can take the next step in their recovery. It is the miracle of healing that flows from Barb to the stroke survivor. Barb thinks outside the box. Barb has arranged for Survivors to get to the sale barn where their cattle are being sold at auction, to hunt and fish, to knit with one hand, to make a holiday meals for their families. She thinks in possibilities.
When we follow up with survivors and families after discharge, Barb's name and how she helped them "survive" their acute recovery comes up consistently. She personally invites all survivors and care givers to take the next step after acute Rehab by inviting them to the "Stroke Support Group" at discharge. She facilitates and empowers the Support Group to learn and to advocate for other survivors. She has taken part in a meet your congressman forum regarding concerns of rehabilitation care of stroke survivors and their care givers.
It is my privilege to submit Barb Koch, a person who has such a positive impact on the recovery of stroke survivors.
