Monday, November 30, 2009, was just another day for me: long workday, junk food for lunch, and Zumba class that evening. The stress was from work mostly, but also trying to keep up with several social obligations and taking some classes online.

That evening during Zumba class, I felt funny. I thought it was just a wave of dizzies. It felt like an out of body experience. Really weird! It passed, and I finished class and went home. Later, I had trouble walking and my arm was numb. Two days later I ended up in the ER. I have a white spot on my brain, and my mind isn't as sharp as it was, but I was lucky.

My stroke was minor and due to overload of stress, bad eating habits, being overweight and being on birth control pills at 44.

I have learned how to slow down, eat better and that I am not immortal! My saving grace in all this was Zumba. I wasn't allowed to do a lot of things but I still went to Zumba even though I just sat and watched. After a while, I would start doing some arm and or leg exercises. I think that helped me get my arm and leg back in shape. As a result, I became certified to teach Zumba Gold for older people or people like me who need something to keep their spirits up and keep them moving. It's fun and lots of laughter keeps everyone enjoying themselves.
