Marilyn  Marilyn S. Survivor I was 22 when I suffered a severe stroke, paralyzing my right side. At the time, doctors said I would not have the use of my right hand, and I would walk with a noticeable limp. I went through one year of outpatient therapy after six weeks of inpatient rehabilitation. With the support of my family and my self-determination, I was able to regain a normal lifestyle. I married at 27 years of age, have a wonderful husband, two beautiful, healthy girls and have worked full-time since 1981, just three years after my stroke. I learned to type one-handed with my left hand and am currently an Administrative Assistant at a civil engineering firm. There are still things that are difficult for me to do with right my hand, but I try not to be defeated. I am very thankful to have recovered as I did, and believe my age was definitely on my side. I have been an inspiration to others suffering from a stroke and feel very fortunate to have recovered as I did. My father also suffered from several strokes, and I was able to support and encourage him during his recovery, as I understood the challenges he was facing. I would be honored to represent the National Stroke Association, and offer encouragement to others who may be facing difficult challenges as a result of stroke, as well as help to raise awareness for the stroke campaign. |
