Survivor
I had my stroke five years ago on January 17, 2006 while teaching in my classroom. I have been a special education teacher for over 18 years. I was fortunate that I received excellent care and therapies (occupational, physical, speech, and counseling) through a local hospital and rehabilitation center in St. Louis. My daughter and parents were an essential factor in my rehab, always encouraging me, even when I was so frustrated with myself. My body and mind just didn't want to behave how I wanted them to! After only three months of therapies, I was able to return to work. I still have residual effects from my stroke, and am recently unable to teach due to a long term illness, but am thankful for the abilities I do have, and the time I have been allowed to touch the lives of children and their families with special needs.
