I had my stroke in November 2000, while teaching sixth grade at a Catholic school. I went back to teaching in April 2001, and finished out the school year. The next year I was teaching sixth grade again at the same school, and the teachers were afraid to have lunch with me. They thought they could get a stroke just by sitting near me. Needless to say, after seven years at that school, they let me go because they didn't know how to deal with me. I still taught a few times, and got involved with our local GRILC, Inc. There I joined a support group for people with a TBI.  I later got a job with the organization. I worked there until July 2010, when it went out of business. Now it is 2011 and I'm out of work and can't find a job anywhere. No one wants to hire a cripple, or "damaged goods". They think I will need a helper to do my job, so they don't hire me. So I sit home. There is always more to a survivor's story, but not enough words or time to tell it all.
