Shonda G. ![]() Survivor On April 5, 2009 I had a brain stem stroke. I began therapy one week after the stroke, however I had many challenges. To begin with, the stroke had taken away my ability to swallow. I also had to learn to walk again. I began with a walker, and graduated to a cane. This took quite a bit of time, but after about one year, I was confident enough to walk without falling. I decided to walk in the Fort Worth Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning 2010. I knew it would be a challenge. My aide and I walked daily for two weeks to prepare for the race. Some mornings we would turn back because of my pain, but we would start again the next morning. On the day of the race, my aide, my son, my supports, and I took the challenge and completed the race. I became a stroke conquerer that day. I now walk to encourage others who have been afflicted with a stroke. We can conquer strokes together! |
