In April of 2004, I had a carotid dissection and wound up in the Neuro ICU with aphasia and no use of the right side of my body. Up until then, I had been a busy practicing veterinarian. In the time since, I worked hard on recovery, and was awarded the Helen Hayes Hospital Award for rehabilitation. I managed to complete my term on the major accrediting body for veterinary colleges, and was selected to serve as chair. I was elected to the executive board of the AVMA, and am currently a candidate for their president.
It's hard to manage in the real world as a stroke survivor; you need to leave your ego at the door and try things you can't do, or can't do very well. But you still have many things to offer the real world if you try.
