As a healthcare professional, I have taken care of many stroke patients during my bedside nursing career. The struggles we face together physically, emotionally, and mentally, are challenging. However, in my current position which includes developing a stroke program, I am able to see the other end: the rehabilitation and recovery. I am blessed to provide stroke education classes for primary stroke prevention to the community we serve. I am also able to influence EMS and our hospitals' response and outcomes for stroke survivors. I have been Chair of the Virginia Heart Disease and Stroke Alliance, which developed and implemented the first state plan for heart disease and stroke prevention. I am honored to be a part of influencing stroke education, response, treatment, prognosis and outcome in our community.
