My name is Sonia Reid, and I am a registered nurse who is currently managing a Stroke Unit in Fort Lauderdale. I am very passionate about stoke education and community outreach, and I am currently opening a 18 beds stroke unit. I am Joint Commission certified as of 3 years ago, and had my recertification in December of 2010. I go in the senior citizen community once per month to educate them on stroke prevention. I sponsor a world Stroke Day at my facility to educate other staff members within the facility. We did blood sugar monitoring, blood pressure checking, cholesterol monitoring, dietary counseling, and smoke cessation with exercise training. We were able to refer a few staff members to their primary care physician, because of high blood pressure detection.

It is very rewarding to see the outcomes of our patients within 2-3 weeks of intense rehabilitation from speech, physical, occupational therapy, and nursing. We develop a family day to give each family member the opportunity to shadow the caregiver and learn. This is a very rewarding job, and I see it as a privilege to be doing this on a daily basis.
