The
presence of collateral blood flow modifies patients' stroke risk differently
according to the severity of intracranial atherosclerosis, shows an analysis of
the WASID trial.
David
Liebeskind (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) and colleagues found
that good collaterals reduced the risk for stroke in patients with severe
stenosis, but were a marker of increased stroke risk among those with milder
stenosis.
"The
influential role of collateral circulation alters prior predictive models and
substantiates the consideration of angiographic features in future studies of
intracranial atherosclerosis," the researchers write in the Annals of
Neurology.
