More
than two fifths of patients have uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) at discharge
after hospitalization for acute stroke, report researchers.
"We
propose that secondary prevention should include efforts to initiate risk
factor control and antihypertensive medication initiation before hospital
discharge," say Christianne Roumie (Nashville VA Medical Center,
Tennessee, USA) and colleagues.
They
cite evidence that BP control helps to prevent recurrent stroke even among
patients without a history of hypertension.
In-hospital
initiation of antihypertensive treatment is not included in the quality acute
stroke care indicators in the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program.
