Karen J.  Karen Survivor At the surprising age of 36, I had a stroke. Having been a nurse for more than 15 years and with two young girls and a loving husband, this was the last thing I ever expected to experience at this age. It happened at 2pm on a weekday. My girls were at school and my husband was on the road (he is a truck driver). I was able to call my sister before I became unconscious and she came to my house and called 911. She made sure the girls were picked up from school. I found out after the stroke that I had a blood disorder called "Lupus Anti-coagulant" and now take Coumadin long-term. My long-term effects are word association, short-term memory, and thought processing. With these deficits, I had to quit my love of nursing. My familiy's income was cut in half. Strokes effect all family members. My girls had to take care of me, instead of me taking care of them. That's not supposed to happen. But, through God's grace, I'm still here! |
