Devon
Caregiver & Family
My name is Devon S., and I lost my father to stroke in July 2009. It was just a month after he walked me down the aisle at my wedding and one month before the birth of my twin nephews, his first grandkids. His death came as an absolute shock to my family and me, and it is still incredibly difficult to grasp. He was only 62 years old and, to me, that's just too early. This unexpected curveball in my life has opened my eyes to the prevalence of stroke in our world today. I suppose prior to the loss of my father, I held the "it won't happen to me" attitude. I imagine a lot of people still think this way.
That being said, I am currently training for the Miami Marathon, and I will be running it for the National Stroke Association in honor of my father, Michael L. I am doing this to raise money and awareness to go towards the education, treatment, and prevention of stroke. I have been overwhelmed by the generous support and donations that my friends and family have made to this wonderful organization, as well as by the encouragement that the National Stroke Association representatives have given me along the way. I have already raised over $3000! The marathon is January 30, 2011, and I'll be thinking of my dad every single step of the way.
