Family & Caregiver Came Crashing DownMy beautiful, healthy, physically fit wife collapsed, turning our world upside down.My wife was accompanying me to a recruiting dinner for my emergency department. We had recently undergone a physical to include a vascular study of the carotids and aorta, and were told we were in the best shape of our lives. We cycled and were very active. On November 19, 2008 it all came crashing down. My wife collapsed unable to speak and move with a facial droop complaining of a "head pop". We were in a room full of ER docs and as an ER doc, I felt hopeless knowing I could only do so much. Her only risk factor: birth control pills. We rushed her to the hospital and she was given thrombolytics. She has since recovered but suffers from seizures induced by bright lights and loud noises. She is back to teaching math in the duo language program. We have adjusted but it has been a rough road. We were lucky. |
