Four years ago my mom had a massive stroke. As a healthcare professional I knew what had happened; yet, I had no idea what the next four years would hold.
When I was seven months pregnant with my second daughter my father passed away. At that point I was so thankful to still have my mother. Six months later the unthinkable happened, she had a massive stroke. As a Neurosurgery and Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant I realized what had happened, yet I had no idea how hard the next four years would be. Talk about taking your work home with you. At the time my daughters were 18 months and 6 months old. My husband was in the Navy and I was working as a Physician Assistant. Our whole world was turned upside down. We have learned a lot in four years and cope the best we all can. I am thankful for the experience because it has made me a better practioner, better caregiver and stroke advocate.
