Stroke Coordinator and Family of a Stroke Survivor

Jamie Fowles has been directly affected by stroke more than once: both her grandmother and grandfather suffered strokes. She has focused her healthcare career on stroke, to fight back against something that affected her so deeply.

Here is her story, in her own words:

My grandmother had a stroke when I was about 10 years old and I was forever changed. She refused to complete any rehabilitation and got significantly worse. I then became a nurse on the Neuro Unit at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.  Shortly thereafter, my grandfather also suffered a stroke. From there on I decided I wanted to work at fighting strokes. I got my masters degree and became the Neuro Clinical Specialist and Stroke Coordinator for Shawnee Mission Medical Center. I work closely with stroke patients on a daily basis and strive to raise awareness about preventing these devastating strokes.
