Elinor
Stroke Survivor
I had a stroke on May 1,
2010. I couldn't talk (Elinor was experiencing aphasia). I
spent a month in the hospital and a rehab center. Somehow I learned to say
"thank you" for all the help I
was getting. A surgeon described surgery on my carotid and I told him
"thank you". I ordered my meals by
pointing to the menu. Finally, I came back home to my assisted living apartment.
A home care speech therapist came twice a week to teach me to talk. I learned to say words but
when she said Medicare not continue paying for home visits, she gave me references so I could learn to
say sentences. While I didn't have any luck finding a new therapist, I taught myself to
write on a computer and had
some articles published.
