A new study reveals increasing levels of non-fasting
triglycerides are linked to a greater risk of stroke.
In a 33-year study, researchers from Denmark followed 7,579
women and 6,372 men who were enrolled in the Copenhagen City Heart Study. All
the participants had their non-fasting triglyceride and cholesterol
measurements taken at the beginning of the study (1976-1978). During the
follow-up period, which was completed by 100 percent of the participants, 837
women and 837 men suffered an ischemic stroke.
Results showed increasing levels of non-fasting triglyceride
levels were associated with an increased risk of stroke in men and women.
Higher cholesterol levels were associated with greater stroke risk in men only.
