Patients Taking Dabigatran (Pradaxa) Must Store It in Original Bottle and Discard Unused Medication After 30 Days

Dabigatran (brand name: Pradaxa) is an anti-clotting medication that was approved by the FDA in October 2010. It's given to patients with atrial fibrillation to help prevent stroke.

It is important that patients who are taking dabigatran follow the package instructions for how to store it and discard any unused medication after 30 days. This 30-day shelf life is shorter than most prescription medications, which typically are good for 12 months after opening.

Patients should assume that dabigatran is not effective thirty days or more after opening the bottle.
