Stroke and Your State Legislature

What is your state legislature up to?Most state legislatures have convened their 2014 session. That means your state legislators have returned to work! Are they talking about issues related to stroke diagnosis, treatment or recovery? We’ve set up a way for you to track the stroke-related issues your state legislators are talking about and communicate with them about those issues as your state’s legislative session progresses. We’ll provide you with all the tools you need to join us and make your voice heard in your state capital this year. All you have to do is visit our State Advocacy Action Center, find your state and discover how you can help stroke survivors and caregivers in your community and beyond. It’s that easy!

Medicare Therapy Caps: Our Voices Were Heard!

image of Medicare cardNational Stroke Association would like to thank the thousands of advocates who responded to our requests to contact Congress about the Medicare therapy caps issue. You sent over 16,200 messages telling your representatives to “stop the therapy caps” by extending the exceptions process. This process enables survivors on Medicare to receive more outpatient therapy services than the program caps currently allow.

Congress did what you asked and extended the exceptions process for three months through March 31, 2014. While this isn’t a permanent fix, it’ll ensure that stroke survivors who rely on Medicare will continue to have access to the therapy services they need to recover, at least for a little longer.

We’ll keep fighting for a permanent fix to the therapy caps issue. We just wanted to thank you for joining that fight and let you know that your voice made a difference for stroke survivors across the country. Together we can make the stroke community heard in 2014 and make positive change for the entire stroke community!

Need Health Insurance?

Health Aid iconDue to problems with the health reform website, open enrollment for plans being offered on the state exchanges has been extended through Mar. 31, 2014. Visit our health reform webpage to link to your state’s exchange and find out what plans are available and if you qualify for subsidies to help you pay for that coverage.

New Shop Stroke Partner Added for 2014!

Photo of a Survival StrapNational Stroke Association is excited to announce the addition of a new Shop Stroke partner in 2014–Survival Straps. As seen in Men’s Health, these popular bracelets and key chains are made from military spec paracord and serve a dual purpose of raising stroke awareness and, in an emergency situation, unraveling the bracelet to help you get out of a jam. Up to 25 percent of each purchase is donated back to National Stroke Association. Get yours today!
