I am a 5 year stroke survivor. March 28 2010, I was home with my 6 year old daughter Laila. After feeling ill the night before and a series of falls that I didn't think anything about , I was awaken at 2am with a serious headache. I lifted my left arm and it fell and the same thing happened with my left leg. Stumbling to get to the restroom I passed out. Laila heard the loud noise and ran to my side. She began shaking my shoulders and calling my name. Opening my eyes I could hear Laila requesting to contact 911. Not thinking clearly I managed with the help of my child to get to my vehicle and drive to the nearest hospital. About 3/4 of the way my left hand fell from the wheel. It was at that moment I realized I was having a stroke. I managed to control the vehicle with my right hand. My stroke was on the right side and impacted the left side of my body. I spent 30 days at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, Along with several months of their outpatient program . I now feel great. While I have a few issues I work hard to prevent a second stroke. After volunteering for a while I am now one of the hospital advocates. I know that I am blessed and was given a second chance and Laila who is now 11 still reprimands me for not allowing her to call 911.
