I had my stroke 5 years ago (January 17, 2006) while teaching in my classroom. I have been a special education teacher for 18+ years. I was fortunate that I received excellent care and therapies (occupational, physical, speech, and counseling) thru Barnes Jewish Hospital and their Rehabilitation Center in St. Louis. My daughter and parents were an essential factor in my rehab, always encouraging me, even when I was so frustrated with myself- my body and mind just didn't want to behave how I wanted it to...! After only 3 months of therapies I was able to return to work. I still have residual effects from my stroke, and am recently unable to teach due to a long term illness, but am thankful for the abilities I do have and the time I have been allowed to touch the lives of children and their families with special needs.
